Gowon Estate Resident Brutally Assaulted by Naval Officers, Left in a Coma

The family of Onyebuchi Nwamordi is calling for justice after he was brutally beaten by naval officers in Gowon Estate, Lagos, on Wednesday, July 30th. The unprovoked assault, which occurred in broad daylight, has left Mr. Nwamodi in a coma and has sparked outrage over the persistent issue of military brutality against civilians.

The incident began at approximately 10 a.m. when Mr. Nwamordi, a local bread vendor and landlord in the estate, was confronted by a community task collector regarding the placement of his bread rack. Despite peacefully relocating the rack and attempting to explain his status as a landlord and a respected member of the community, the task collector declined any discussion and instead summoned naval officers.

“My father told the man he was willing to speak with the CDA chairman, but the man refused and called the the CDA chairman, Oyebanjo Dauda who called the barrak chief, Umaru Murtala, the barrak chief called other naval officers,” said Nwamordi Ebenezer, the victim’s son. “They arrived and, without listening to a word of explanation, immediately began to assault me and my father. They beat him with objects until he collapsed.”

An eyewitness described the scene as a savage attack on an armless man. “The naval officials came and started beating the man to the point that blood started gushing out of his mouth, eyes, and ears,” the witness stated. “The man cried out ‘oh my God’ and then fainted.”

The victim was rushed to the hospital and was rejected three times but was later accepted by one hospital where he has been in a coma since the attack. A doctor’s report noted “worsening hypoxia,” which raised suspicion of a possible pulmonary embolism or infectious processes like pneumonia.

Also, Police officers from Masalachi Police Station, Gowon Estate, and Area M, Idimu, arrived at the scene, but no arrests were made at the time of this report.

The Nwamordi family is now pleading with well-meaning Nigerians, human rights organizations, and government security agencies to intervene. They are demanding that the naval officers responsible for this barbaric act be identified and brought to justice to serve as a deterrent to others.

“How long will civilians continue to suffer brutality in the hands of military personnel?” asked Nwamordi Ebenezer. “This was a senseless act of violence against an innocent man. We will not rest until the officers who did this are held accountable.”
